CHJ PROJECT GUIDE
How to Prepare for Residential Earthworks
Practical steps to take before machinery arrives, including access, services and finished-level planning.
Start with the finished result
Good earthworks planning begins with what the area needs to become. Finished surface levels, water movement, access and adjoining structures help determine what should be removed, retained or built up.
Inspect access and ground conditions
Compact machinery can assist on many residential properties, but gate widths, overhead restrictions, slopes, soft ground and nearby structures must be considered. Adelaide soil conditions vary and can affect excavation and disposal.
Check before excavation
Current underground-service information should be obtained before digging. Plans may not show every private asset, so on-site investigation and safe work practices remain important. Relevant planning, easement and council requirements should also be checked.
Ask for a scope that is clear
Confirm the work area, depths, levels, materials, disposal, exclusions and responsibility for later trades. This makes quotes easier to compare and reduces surprises during the project.
